Art and design have been parallel and often intersecting practices in my work. Moving freely within genres, materials and surfaces has enriched each discipline. Design is intriguing because it is necessary and useful. There is a problem to solve, a space to create, or information to convey. When the design project is done for the day, my studio becomes an art space. I switch into a deliberate mindset of not knowing, listening, intuiting and exploration. Cross fertilization works. My recent art in the darkroom develops concepts I’ve worked out on the drawing table. And my freshest fabric designs begin with playing around with brush strokes.
